though this book is about the filmmaker stanley kubrick and his films, my afterword has to be about stanley, my husband. when i married him, i knew i had embarked on a great and bold and romatic adventure. when he died i did not know how to live without him. i'm still not living without him. his voice is in my head, his image in my eyes. the long dialogue continues. i still follow his advice. i loved and admired the way he lived. he was never boring or ordinary. if i tell of the sensation of being on a jorney down a huge river, the shores of the world in a haze, people will laugh at me for gushing in romantic clichés. but i'm only reflecting my memory with precision.
it is my great fortune that stanley's love and care for his family had the same intensity that his films had.
